The USDA's latest report forecasts Ethiopia’s 2023–24 total coffee production to reach 8.35 million bags (501,000 MT), up by 0.96% compared to the 2022–23 coffee year (CY Oct 2023 –Sep 2023) going with 8.27 million 60 kg bags (496,200 MT).
In 2023/24, exports are forecast to reach 4.83 million 60 kg bags (289.800 MT), up by 600 MT compared with exports in CY 2022/23, which are estimated at 4.820 million 60 kg bags (289,200 MT). The current slow export pace has resulted from low international prices, which discourage the movement of coffee to import destinations. Recently, the FDRE Ministry of Agriculture and the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority have collaborated in strict follow-ups to facilitate the movement of the coffee stored for extended periods at warehouses in Addis Ababa and other major coffee towns. Despite low international prices, the number of coffee exporters has increased due to the requirement for foreign currency needed for imported goods to trade and for importing inputs for manufacturing industries.
The report also highlighted increasing domestic consumption, with major cities hosting a growing number of small roadside coffee shops that emerged and expanded over the past 15 years. The national consumption for Ethiopia over the coffee year of October 2023–September 2024 is forecast to grow by 50,000 bags (1.45%), higher than the October 2022–September 2023 coffee year at a total of 3.48 million bags.
