South Korea’s Arabica green coffee imports surging to new highs

27 March 2022

Trade through the Ethiopian coffee week

ECX’s floor ended with the export-grade trade of 31,567kg natural coffees, 20,661kg down from the previous week. The trade of Natural Sidamo & Natural Djimmah covered a major portion while coffees from origins such as Bench & Bale took the rest of the share. We had modest changes contrary to the usual vertical purchase price increments along with all the 3 core Ethiopian natural coffees in which average prices for Natural Djimmah decreased where us Lekempti prices spiked & Sidamo remained the same compared to the prior week.ECTA's minimum prices for selected naturals have been going Natural Sidamo G4 at $2.00/Ib.,Natural Djimmah G5 at $1.75/Ib.& Natural Lekempti G5 at $1.75/Ib, in which prices increased for Djimmah & Sidamo while remaining the same for Lekempti coffee.

South Korea’s Arabica green coffee imports surging to new highs

The Korean Herald reported coffee imports reached 189,502 MT, 7.3% higher compared to the previous year valued at $916.5million with Ethiopian coffees taking $75.7 million.
South Korean green bean importers have been reliable partners for Ethiopian green exporters for years as South Korea remained in the top ten destinations for an extended course of time. It is also reported the continuous rise in green coffee imports highly accounts for the number of coffee shops which has reached 83,363 in December 2021, up 88.2% compared to 2020.
With our dedicated South Korean representation, we were able to increase the assistance needed for our clients in addressing their Ethiopian green coffee imports & sourcing needs.
