Ethiopia’s majority export green coffee supplies come from Djimmah, an area considered to be the first origin of Arabica coffee. Besides its largest green coffee production share, it also advances Ethiopia’s green coffee production through the works of the Jimmah Agricultural Research Centre (JARC).
The origin's harvest period extends from October - December in low-altitude areas & November to January in high-altitude areas.
As we approach the newest harvest calendar the Djimmah Zone Agricultural office announced the expectations of 2022/23 produce reaching 200,000MT. According to close estimates, these forecasts are close to a 30% increase from the prior year's production of 135,000MT of yields. The increase in volumes is attributed to the usage of improved green coffee varieties & the replacement of old trees.
Producing districts such as Manna are examples of such an increase with estimated productions of 19,000MT up 10.5% from the previous year's 17,000MT with more than 53 percent of the crop heading to the central market to export supplies.
According to the Zone’s Agriculture Office head Mr.Motuma Genbaba, preparations are underway for the upcoming harvest. Mr.Motuma mentioned early preparations are progressing well across unions in setting up African drying beds while processing stations are getting ready to set up their processing machines.
The coffee origin continues to be Ethiopia’s largest green coffee catchment area with 500,000 hectares of land covered with coffee.
