Exports of coffee from Africa increased to 1.11 million bags in January 2023, the ICO reported.

Africa’s exports of coffee (all forms) increased by 19.5% to 1.11 million bags in January 2023 from 0.93 million compared to the same period of the prior year.

Uganda’s exports jumped by 22.9% to 0.49 million bags compared with 0.4 million bags in January 2022, primarily due to reduced Robusta supplies from Indonesia and Vietnam.Other noteworthy origins for January 2023 include Tanzania and Côte d'Ivoire, where exports rose by 105.8% and 17.8%, respectively.

Coffee exports (all forms) from South America decreased by 19.9% to 3.93 million bags in January 2023, with Brazil, Colombia, and Peru accounting for the majority of the decline, with combined shipments falling by 20.9%.

Brazilian Naturals' green bean exports decreased in January 2023, dropping by 17.2% to 2.78 million bags. This is primarily attributed to the largest exporter of this green coffee bean category (Brazil), which saw its January exports down by 18.1% (2.52 million bags) compared to 3.08 million bags in 2022. The market trends (volume and price of Ethiopian Naturals) following this significant decrease from Brazil will be an interesting matter to be followed by roasters, green coffee bean importers, and Ethiopia, which finds its produce labeled as Brazilian Naturals in the global market.

Ethiopia Cup of Excellence(COE) 2023 postponed to the coming year

Cup of Excellence Ethiopia is one of the preeminent coffee quality competitions, giving a unique opportunity for Ethiopian specialty coffee producers. However, the Alliance for Coffee Excellence (ACE) announced this year’s event has been postponed to 2024 due to various reasons, which the source did not specify. To date, the AFCA National Taste of Harvest has passed as the major specialty coffee competition in Ethiopia in the ongoing 2022–23 coffee year.
