The Ethiopia Coffee and Tea Authority at the US SCA Expo 2023

10 April 2023

The Ethiopia Coffee and Tea Authority at the US SCA Expo 2023

The US’s specialty green coffee imports have significantly contributed to the advancement of coffee culture, particularly in North America, by bringing higher quality coffees. In tandem with this reality, the annual Speciality Coffee Expo calls for the largest gathering of specialty coffee professionals this year, commencing from April 21–23, 2023, in Portland, Oregon.

The expo is well-known for its educational presentations, which shed light on practical approaches to addressing challenges in the specialty coffee industry. This year, it will have even more interesting topics presented by Audgna Debela, Ph.D., Director General at the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority, and Kassaye Tolessa Sherge, Ph.D., Director for Food Science and Nutrition Research at the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research. Adunga Debela will be discussing the national market system changes that have taken place in recent years, and Kassaye Tolessa will present a summary of the latest research on why Ethiopian coffees are unique in biochemical composition and various producing regions.

The United States has been one of the longest-standing Ethiopian green coffee importers. Recent data from the ECTA  shows the US ranked 4th in importing more than 127,000 bags of the 2021/22 crop over 4 months. (July - Nov 2022).

While many eyes are set on the expo, the International Coffee Organization's (ICO) latest report comes with the world coffee market expected to undergo a deficit of 7.3 million bags and February’s exports of Brazilian naturals decreasing by 33.0% to 2.34 million bags, the expo is expected to focus on major topics that will affect the industry in the months to come.
