According to the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority's (ECTA) latest reports, export earnings exceeded 1.3 billion USD from the exports of more than 240,000 MT of green coffee in the ended fiscal year (July 8, 2022 - July 7, 2023). Only 67% of the planned export volume has been achieved, with a revenue of 1.8 billion USD, and 60,000 MT less compared to the same period of the prior fiscal year (July 8,2021-July 7, 2022).
Saudi Arabia imported the largest amount of Ethiopian coffee with 48,413 MT, followed by Germany’s 36,065 MT, and the US ranked third with imports of 21,020 MT of Ethiopian green coffee. The revenue from these top three destinations accounted for more than 548 million USD (42% of the total revenue). South Korea, Belgium, Japan, the UAE, China, Italy, and Sudan took the ranks from 4th to 10th place. In terms of coffee types, Sidama, Lekempti, and Djimmah ranked as the top three export coffees.
The authority attributed the decline in export volumes to a 30% decrement in international prices, which have not matched local prices (farmgate-exporter), discouraging exporters from trading large volumes of the current crop. Export figures for July are also expected to be low, as they persisted earlier in the peak sales period of the current harvest, with stock buildup continuing across farmers, processing stations, and Addis Ababa’s warehouses.
